PRAYER: A Novena To Saint Maximilian Kolbe For The Grace To Be Freed From Addiction
(I collect prayers, and I’m especially fond of novenas. I find them to be a very practical means of organizing thoughts and hopes. A year or so ago, I was putting together a litany for parents with wayward children.
It was dedicated to a woman who was going through a very bad time with her daughter, a young woman whose life was being slowly ruined because of her addiction to drugs. I was shocked, and somewhat horrified, when I could not find a prayer concerning addiction, any kind of addiction. It was as though the church turned its face away from such degradation. Perhaps there is just too much shame in the idea of addiction to want to actually pray for someone in such trouble.
If that’s the case, then that is the real shame.
I was overjoyed when I finally came across the following novena. I can’t remember now where I found it, but in finding it I immediately became an ardent fan of Brother Kolbe.)
A Novena to Saint Maximilian Kolbe for the Grace to be Freed from Addiction
Saint Maximilian Kolbe, your life of love and labor for souls was sacrificed amid the horrors of a concentration camp and hastened to its end by an injection of a deadly drug.
Look with compassion upon (NAME OF PERSON) who is now entrapped in addiction to drugs/alcohol and whom I now recommend to your powerful intercession. Having offered your own life to preserve that of a family man, I turn to you with trust, confident that you will understand and help.
Obtain for me the grace never to withhold my love and understanding, or to fail in persevering prayer that the enslaving bonds of addiction may be broken and that full health may be restored to him, whom I love.
I will never cease to be grateful to God who has helped me and heard your prayer for me.
Amen.

Hi I’m asking for prayers Jesus says when more come together in prayer he answers according to his will I have struggled with addiction since I was I 13now 38 also I would like to also mention my son never has seen my problem but has heard rumors had a bad depression that happened to Me 2 years ago that led me back to the worst nightmare I’m not have really bad like I used to be but it is well hidden that’s why I’m asking cuz my depression is to the point that I’m giving up. I will definitely pray for you two. I am praying for a lot of people with addictions, including my own family. God does miracles and you just ask Him. Never give up hope, NEVER. Depression is a huge trap, and takes you nowhere, and does no good. I know you want to help your son and yourself, so just think of depression like an anchor that is weighing you down, and you can cut it loose if you want. Don’t give in to it, when you get depressed, start counting all the good things God has given you and thank Him! You are alive, you can beat this! Ask Our Lord to help you and He will!!

Thank you so much for finding and sharing this beautiful Novena to Saint Maximilian Kolbe. I am in the same boat with this mother you mentioned above. My one and only son, Earl, is hooked with drugs for some 15 years now. And today is his 29th birthday, same date of the Feast of St. Maximilian. With this novena, I will do the 9-day novena today. I just finished my novena to St. Monica. I never stop praying for my son’s complete healing body and soul. I will keep on waiting for God’s love and mercy to be poured for my son thru the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the angels and saints, in Jesus’ Name, Amen!

I prayed this prayer for so many years, it became almost like the Lord’s Prayer to me. I found it amazing that just a few words can make such a difference in our lives, how we approach a problem, a challenge. These days I use the following prayer:
For the Victims of Addiction
O blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and persevering love. Amen.
I also prayed a forgiveness prayer for adult children every day, which had a most powerful impact on me, settling my heart every morning, and turning it back to love, instead of concern and impatience.

St. Maximilian, I come to you with a broken and aching heart. My husband is battling an addiction. We have 5 children and we are also in this battle. Please pray for my husband and our family. He has had so much heart break, abandonment and neglect throughout his youth, please pray for the healing of his broken heart. Ask our most loving Jesus to fill his heart with love. Let him see how great and powerful our Dear Lord is. Ask our loving Jesus to help me love more,to be more patient so that I can teach my family to love each other, and most of all to love our Heavenly Father, his loving Son and the Holy Spirit. I am in the same boat, Veronica. It is hard to be a mom and see ur child suffer, but there is an added challenge when the addict is my husband and father of my 4 children. As head of household so much depends on him and our daily lives are impacted in unimaginable ways. It is torture. I pray your prayers have provided you relief and consolation. Please pray for us too.

I prayed this prayer for years for my daughter. She is now happily in school, studying to be an art therapist. She went through a lot, but she managed to come through it all. When I told that I was proud of her, she was so surprised. And I told her, You could be doing this now, or in ten years, or in twenty.
I found it very, very difficult to find a novena for drug-addiction. And was very relieved when I found one, and most especially one associated with Brother Kolbe.

WIth this Novena, i put my father, Charles Fredrick, in God’s hands through the intercession of st Maximilian Kolbe, Dad is in rehabilitation centre right now, for alchol and smoke abuse, that his internal organs were starting to completely get damaged, he was so abusive and ungrateful to life. Please pray with us for my cousin Lyle; he is battling alcohol and drug addiction. His mom is fighting for his life with much prayers . We are all affected by my cousin’s addictions. I am not sure if tough love is the answer because I feel horrible for telling him that he is no longer welcomed into our lives and home until he sobers up. As a single parent, I need to protect my teenaged son and our home from Lyle’s influence. My husband died as a result of his alcohol addiction when our son was very young. I know the devastation of addictions because I used to be entrapped in alcohol addiction myself. Very recently, I had to take a strong stand and tell my cousin he cannot stay in our home anymore when he comes to town because our lives become disrupted by his dysfunction. I feel bad because Lyle already has enough hurt from childhood truama and abandonment issues – I feel like I added to it. However, I am tired from doing all I possibly can to help my cousin sober up. Please pray with us for my cousin to become stronger than his addictions. He is also the father of an 8 month old daughter. Thank you.

We can doubt ourselves if we use the word, no, to those we love. But there are different meanings of the word. Sometimes it is used to cause heartbreak, but other times it is used to say, I love you.

I understand how your cousin’s presence disrupts your home, i understand you had to push him away for your family’s sake. On the other hand, I think you may be right, that by doing so, you have damaged him more (although i pray otherwise). I also think that it could be a blessing in disguise (only when you are ready) if you call him, let him know you truly love and care for him, and if you feel sorry for hurting him, I think it would be helpful for him to know. And if you feel like you want to help him recover, let him know that. This is the time when the family needs to unite. This is the best time to never leave him. This is the time he needs you the most.

I found myself facing this issue with my daughter a few years ago now. And I was very discouraged when I could not find a novena for alcohol or drug abuse. And was so relieved that I found this one. It gave me a rock to lean on every night when I prayed it.
It gave me the strength to dry my tears so I could drive down to the psychiatric hospital where she landed because of her drug abuse.
It gave me the balance I needed to look my daughter in the eyes, and be with her as she was arrested for speeding with drugs in the car and deciding to go into rehab.
It even gave me the nerve to drive all the way to see her at rehab – even though she was so agitated by it all that she didn’t want to see me.
Keep praying this prayer. Never let go. Never lose your faith, or your love for your daughters, or your commitment to pray for them.

I just want to say thank you for the Novena to Saint Maximillian Kolbe.I have a daughter who was addicted to pain killers and because of that ended up seriously ill in hospital.I also had been hunting for a Novena for drug addicts and couldn’t find one until I found this one.I said this Novena and one to Our Lady of Hope and and one to The Sacred Heart of Jesus. I feel that we need as many people as we can find to pray for her, that her pain is very deep. And that she is frightened. So we should pray about that, too, that her fears be eased so that she can come back into the joy of her family and her life.
I will add her to my prayer list, and hold her in the warmth of my heart and soul. She needs a great deal of tenderness.

Will you please pray for me? I use crack cocaine and cigarettes each day. Because I use only a small amount of crack ($10 worth) a day, I hesitate to go to the local hospital and ask to be admitted to the behavioral health ward for addiction. I have tried to quit, and I don’t know how. I don’t hang out with other drug users. I eat right and exercise. I just don’t know how to leave the drug alone. I feel it is destroying my health, and it certainly makes me depressed to be in this situation. Will you please pray for me to quit using drugs… through positive means. I’m tired of the addiction. Please pray for my son Timothy who is struggling with addiction, he takes drugs to wake him up and drugs to go to sleep. He is filled with so much anxiety which drives him to using drugs. He was just discharged from the hospital for an overdose of amphetamines, he almost died but feel the Lord spared his life for God’s purpose. He just passed the state bar to work as a lawyer but believe the pressure has become too much for him to bear so he relapsed after several years. As his mother, I have been by his side for at least 10 years praying and supporting him so he knows he has his family’s unconditional love. I believe God has given me strength to stay strong for him but this last situation has caused me to feel weakened and weary. I am grateful to find this novena to St. Maximilian and will pray it daily. Thank you for your prayers.

Ira, I will be honored to pray for your father. When I was in the depth of darkness because of the helplessness I felt over my daughter’s drug addiction, I finally realized that I could pray for her. And I did. I never stopped praying for her until she told me that she was a few years “clean.”

Please pray for my daughter who is bound by the chains of addiction to cocaine and alcohol. I pray the rosary every day on her behalf as well as pray this novena and many other novenas. I would like to make a suggestion. I have been very ill over the past six years. And I am recovering in my body from the use of essential oils. I met a woman who told me about doTerra, and the effects it has had on my body have been miraculous. Pains that I had for over 40 years were gone in two days on one of the programs. I am telling you about this because these oils are made of natural ingredients, and I notice that they have oils with names such as Serenity and Peace. When I use the Peace oil blend I am truly at peace with what I am dealing with. If this might interest you for yourself and your precious daughter and you don’t find anyone around you to talk to you about this, I can give you the name and telephone number of the woman I work with. She answers all my questions, and is very helpful. The difference in my body since I began taking these oils (four months) I can’t even begin to describe.
Another thing I would like to suggest (I hope you don’t mind looking at one more novena) is a prayer to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. She is one who performs absolute miracles. Brenda, I will pray for your daughter. I have a son addicted to alcohol and I do the same things you do, I pray the rosary daily as well. Time in front of the Blessed Sacrament has helped me. I know that when I kneel in front of Jesus in front of the Blessed Sacrament and tell Him what is going on, He hears all my prayers. He knows our anguish and He can do all things, and He will answer our prayers, but in His time and in His way which is the best.
I know that He is God, and also human like us in all things but sin. He suffered a horrible death for us and gave us His life for our sins. If we really believe that, then we have to trust Him, right?

I have just learned of Saint Maximilian today. My son Heinz Maximillian is in jail because of a heroin addiction which has taken his life from him and thusly our family. Please pray for my son who has a computer gaming addiction. Although, he is not addicted to drugs or alcohol, this addiction robs him of his life similar to drugs and alcohol. I will pray for Peter. I have a lot of addicts I pray for, including my own son, Paul. The feast of St. Peter and Paul is coming up, June 29. On that day last year my son went in to inpatient rehab for a month; that was a miracle. That is also one of the feasts for your your son Peter. My son is doing better but is still not out of the woods. Keep praying for Peter, and never lose hope or give up on God’s mercy.

Blessed Lesa, when I was feeling a lot hopeless, lost, and scared for my daughter who was very much involved with drugs, I did find some solace in praying this prayer. Every day. The more I prayed the prayer of forgiveness for my children, the more things seemed to come into a better perspective.

I am praying for my grandson, Christopher Joseph, who has hit bottom with drugs/alcohol. He walked out of detox (court ordered) because he didn’t want to do residential rehab. He thinks he can do it on his own and we all know that is impossible. He can not say the name of God so we are desperately praying for that also. May he be free from his addiction, turn to Our Lord, and find his way back to be clean and sober and serve Almighty God for the rest of his life. Blessings and prayers to all who are asking and praying for help.

Here is the prayer for forgiveness of adult children that I found very helpful along with this novena when I went through this with my daughter. Who was very much like your son. And she’s functioning now, and even shows me respect. So never stop praying and believing in God’s ability to make all things new.

I pray everyday for those families and over ones dealing with addiction. My son is an addict and I pray
he overcomes his addiction. I will keep Christopher Joseph on my prayers and keep praying for all as well.

Today is another day of prayers for all who are addicted to this demon called DRUGS. As for myself i too have an adult son who is trapped n this awful life of never ending day in and day out…I’ve been praying this prayer to Saint Maximillian for sometime now..i feel the pain of all the families who are also caught up in this nightmare..please add a prayer for my son (C.V.)as well..Today we go through this battle together. I found when my daughter was going through this, the prayer to forgive her as my adult child helped to ease my anger and frustration with the situation, and made me much more supportive and responsive to her. Sometimes the wrong road can bring a person to the right place. Think of Saint Paul, who as a younger man thought it was right to kill Christians. So let us pray that Jesus is with her, no matter the path your precious daughter has taken. And that she allows God to reveal to her her place in his kingdom. Amen.

Please pray for my son John. He is self-destructing. He has a beautiful family who love him, but he is unable to see past is own torment and that drugs make that torment worse, not better. I will start my novena to St. Maximillian Kolbe today. May Jesus and the Blessed Virgin be with him and let him feel their presence and unconditional love. I pray he will realize that it is Satin who trying to take his soul. I pray God gives me the wisdom, the words and the strength to help him. I am so frightened.

Blessed Renee, let us pray that Jeff and Scott find strength by learning to lean on the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. And may they once again become proud of who they are, and stop listening to the lies that evil whispers in their ears that they are better off bound and degraded. I feel your pain. My son also struggles with addiction and there is not a lot of good news right now.There are so many people with this problem and it affects whole families. Don’t give up hope.
