POETRY: Gabriel’s News by Hafez

August 3, 2016

Come, come, this Pantheon of desire is set On wobbly stones. Bring some wine, For the joists of life are laid on the winds. The man who can walk beneath the blue wheeling Heavens and keep his clothes free of the dark Of attachment–I’ll agree to be the slave of his high will. What can I tell you? Last night at the tavern, when I was drunk and ruined, what glad news Did Gabriel bring from the invisible world? Your perch is on the lote tree in Paradise, Oh, wide-seeking hawk, what are you doing  Crouching in this mop closet of calamity? People on the battlements of Heaven are Blowing the whistle to bring you back. How does it happen that you tripped the noose? I’ll give you this advice: Please learn it And practice it well. [...]

POETRY: The Annunciation by Edwin Muir

August 3, 2016

The angel and the girl are met. Earth was the only meeting place. For the embodied never yet Traveled beyond the shore of space. The eternal spirits in freedom go. See, they have come together, see, While the destroying minutes flow, Each reflects the other’s face Till Heaven in hers and Earth in his Shine steady there. He’s come to her From far beyond the farthest star, Feathered through time. Immediacy Of strangest strangeness is the bliss That from their limbs all movement takes. Yet the increasing rapture brings So great a wonder that it makes Each feather tremble on his wings. Outside the window footsteps fall Into the ordinary day And with the sun along the wall Pursue their unreturning way That was ordained in eternity. [...]

ANGELS: Gabriel The Herald by David Albert Jones

August 1, 2016

From Angels: A History In general, in the Hebrew scriptures, when an angel speaks, the angel becomes transparent, as it were.  The voice of the angel is the voice of the one who sends the angel, and the personality of the angel itself is not visible.  It was only in late books such as Daniel that angels were given names.  According to the book of Daniel, Gabriel is a figure having the appearance of a man who explains the meaning of Daniels’ vision.  He comes in swift flight to give Daniel knowledge and understanding.  The name Gabriel means mighty man of God (from the Hebrew Gabar, mighty) and has the connotation of a ruler or warrior. The Archangel Gabriel is a popular figure who pops up in several other Jewish books [...]

POETRY: The Temptation Of St. Joseph by W. H. Auden

December 17, 2014

From For the Time Being I JOSEPH My shoes were shined, my pants were cleaned and pressed, And I was hurrying to meet My own true Love: But a great crowd grew and grew Till I could not push my way through, Because A star had fallen down the street; When they saw who I was, The police tried to do their best. CHORUS [off] Joseph, you have heard What Mary says occurred; Yes, it may be so. Is it likely? No. JOSEPH The bar was gay, the lighting well-designed, And I was sitting down to wait My own true Love: A voice I’d heard before, I think, Cried: “This is on the House. I drink To him Who does not know it is too late;” When I asked for the time, Everyone was very kind. CHORUS [off] Mary may be pure, But, Joseph, are you [...]

POETRY: Mary And Gabriel by Rupert Brooke

December 17, 2014

Young Mary, loitering once her garden way, Felt a warm splendor grow in the April day, Out of the gold air of the afternoon, One knelt before her: hair he had, or fire, Bound back above his ears with golden wire, Baring the eager marble of his face. Not man’s or woman’s was the immortal grace Rounding the limbs beneath that robe of white, And lighting the proud eyes with changeless light, Incurious. Calm as his wings, and fair, That presence filled the garden. She stood there, Saying, “What would you, Sir?” He told his word, “Blessed art thou of women!” Half she heard, Hands folded and face bowed, half long had known, The message of that clear and holy tone, That fluttered hot sweet sobs about her heart; [...]

ANGELS: Gabriel — The Arrow that Pierces Disbelief

December 21, 2011

Discussing the reality of angels is difficult for me.  I find it difficult for a number of reasons. Not that long ago I strolled through the gift shop at the National Cathedral.  There were books and pictures, statues, and stuffed angels.  There were also books and pictures, and other paraphenalia about dragons.  And fairies.  And unicorns. I wanted to get down on my knees and ask the child who had the feet of a green dragon grasped in her hands whether or not she thought dragons were real.  And then I wanted to ask her if she thought angels were real. If dragons and angels are being peddled side-by-side, are we not, by doing this, equating the two?  Isn’t the blatent message to child and adult alike that angels are just [...]

ANGELS: A Novena To Archangel Gabriel

December 21, 2011

(Author unknown) Archangel Gabriel, I venerate you as the angel of the incarnation because God has especially appointed you to bear the messages concerning the God-man to Daniel, Zechariah, and the blessed virgin, Mary.  Give me a tender and devoted mother, more like your own. I venerate you also as the strength from God because you are the giver of God’s strength, consoler, and comforter chosen to strengthen God’s faithful, and teacher of important truths.  I ask for the grace of a special power of the will to strive for holiness of life.  Steady my resolutions.  Renew my courage.  Comfort and console me in the problems, trials, and sufferings of daily living as you consoled my savior in his agony, Mary in her sorrows, [...]
